For the past couple of weeks, I've started on a new diet. But it's more than a diet, it's a complete life change. It's called going Paleo, as in Paleolithic. It all started when I watched a documentary called Fat Head that had been sitting on my Netflix queue for about a month. It can also be found on Hulu here: Fat Head.
The movie is a follow-up to Super Size Me, in which director Tom Naughton actually loses weight on an all fast food diet. He proposes that mother nature isn't dumb and that in order to be actually healthy and lose weight we need to eat a diet which is consisting mainly of meat and vegetables, taking in very little carbs or starch, getting all the sugar you need from fresh fruits, and staying away from fake vegetable oils and cooking everything in butter. It goes into the actual scientific causes of heart disease and heart attacks. (Little side info here - there has never been one study in the history of medicine that has ever linked a high fat diet to heart disease.) He talks about the political motivations behind the food pyramid and why the government wants us to fill the quarter of every plate with starches and carbs.
So the day after I watched the movie, I knew I had to make a change. I started to proselytize to all my friends, and found places to bring it up in my classes. And I decided to kick off this new lifestyle the best way I knew how.
A huge GD steak.
This mofo was 17 oz. of pure Angus Ribeye beauty. I salted both sides and let it rest a bit. I brushed melted butter on both sides and massaged in some cajun seasoning. I seared that bad boy for about 45 seconds, flipped it for another 45, and finished in the oven with 2 minutes on each side. This brought it to medium rare and I let it rest for a minute before going all Fred Flintsone.
I'll be posting some more meals here as they happen. I can tell you though, that after two weeks of this I have lost 6 pounds, I have more energy, I feel more upbeat and happy and I don't have the urge to snack through the day and I'm never hungry until mealtime. I'll keep you updated with how I'm doing.
So, what do you guys think about the movie? About the Paleo lifestyle? About huge effing steaks?
